Abstract

Effects of pinching the main shoot, defoliation and N6- benzylaminopurine (BA) on sex expression in cucumber were investigated by using a qualitative cucumber, cv.. Sagami-hanjiro. Pinching main shoot induced development of bisexual, pistillate flowers and lateral shoots. Direct application ofBA to the staminate cluster at node 4 or 7 induced pistillate flower development only on that cluster, especially on that at the node 4. The defoliation by allowing one leaf remained in the plant decreased the total numbers of flower of all sexes. However, the defoliation with one leaf remaining at node 4 or 7 gave the same total numbers of staminate, bisexual, pistillate flowers and lateral shoots when compared with those at the corresponding nodes in the control plants. The reduction of leaf area to half or quarter had no effect on the total numbers of staminate and bisexual flowers, but this method decreased the total numbers of pistillate flowers.

Abstract

Influences of photoperiod, defoliation, and growth regulators (AgNO3, ethephon, gibberellic acid, and uniconzole) on sex expression were observed in three cultivars of cucumber, Cucumis sativus L. Eight photoperiod (SD) condition increased number of pistillate flowers and decreased number of staminate flowers in a monoecious cucumber, ‘Sagami-hanjiro’ Defoliation increased number of staminate flowers under SD. Ethephon decreased number of staminate flowers under SD, but had no effect under 24 h light photoperiod (LD) in defoliated plant. Gibberellic acid (GA) increased number of staminate flowers regardless of photoperiod and defoliation. LD slightly increased number of staminate flowers in a monoecious ‘Otone No.1’. Defoliation significantly decreased number of pistillate flowers under LD. Ethephon decreased number of staminate flowers and increased pistillate flowers under both photoperiodic conditions. The effect of ethephon was nullified by defoliation. Uniconazole markedly decreased number of staminate flowers and increased pistillate flowers regardless of photoperiod and defoliation. Uniconazole also induced bisexual flowers. Agynoecious cucumber, ‘Rensei’ produced almost only pistillate flowers under both SD and LD, and this tendency was not affected by defoliation. AgNO3 induced staminate flowers and decreased number of pistillate flowers under LD and also under SD if defoliated. GA3 decreased number of pistillate flowers in all treatments by causing blind nodes where neither floral nor vegetative buds developed.

Abstract

Shoot growth of the Fuji apple cultivar was retarded by spraying with paclobutrazol at 500 ppm, four times during the growing season, Significant difference in the number of flower buds between the treated and the untreated trees were found. Carbohydrate and nitrogen levels in the treated trees was higher than in the untreated ones. Both calcium and hydrogen cyanamide enhanced bud break but hydrogen cyanamide was more effective. Addition of “Merit” ( 7-5-3 ( NPK ) formula fertilizer ) to these chemicals increased induction of bud break under simulated tropical / sub – tropical conditions. Results varied with application time and these results are not fully understood and required further investigation.
